Teams In the Hunt for Prince Fielder
By J.B. | Posted Wednesday, December 21
In the on-going saga surrounding the next stop for Price Fielder may be coming to an end. The Chicago Cubs seem to be the front runner. Milwaukee's division rival is one of just five teams in baseball that could conceivably cover his asking price, and maintain a strong supporting cast. Cubs fans might finally have some hopes for a post season run, if they have a home run hitter on their roster. There are other teams that may consider paying the big money for Fielder.
The Orioles have little chance of making mark in the American League without a big bat to back them up. Their need for talent at first base isn’t as pressing as Chicago’s, but they do need someone to step up and score points. The Orioles are not likely to be playoff contenders with just Fielder on their bench, and Prince may be reluctant to strike a deal with such an offensively weak team. Should Orioles owner Peter Angelos throw some serious money his way, Fielder might not rule out a contract with Baltimore.
The Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik and Prince have a history of working together. Zduriencik was responsible for drafting the first basemen. It looks like Zduriencik is wiling to make a serious offer to get Prince to play for Seattle. Consecutive last-place finishes for the Mariners could be enough to keep him from considering a contract with that ball club. The defending world champion St. Louis Cardinals may be in the hunt for Prince. The Cardinals are not afraid to spend big money on star players. Albert Pujols will most likely be playing for someone else in 2012, and Fielder would be a great replacement on offense.
